The creator of HypnoBirthing®
Marie Mongan, (she goes by Mickey) is the mother of four adult children, all born in the late 50s and early 60s. In a time when natural birthing, as in vaginally and without medication, was not common at all, Mickey got inspired to aim for a natural birth as nature had foreseen it. She was strongly influenced by the theories of Dr. Jonathan Dye, of Buffalo, New York, and Grantly Dick-Read, of the UK, two pioneers in natural childbirth and used their theories to underline her aim to go a new way in birthing - the oldes one nature has put into place.
Mickey was able to have her four children vaginally but during the first two of her births, Mickey was medicated against her own will. For her later births, she successfully convince her doctor how unnecessary this anesthesia was and was able to have her later births entirely free of medication and
anesthesia. She even arranged to have her husband in the room while giving birth which was totally uncommon at that time. Though unsatisfying for Mickey remained the fact, that her babies where taken from her immediately after giving birth to be kept in the nursery whereas she believed that the time after birthing was highly important for bonding. As a result HypnoBirthing® includes the aspect of a natural birth, bonding with the baby and bonding as a family, before and after birth.
Her book, HypnoBirthing® - A Celebration of Life, was written in 1989; her latest book, HypnoBirthing® - The Mongan Method is now available in leading book outlets and through the HypnoBirthing Institute.
